Tableau Terminology

Let's review some common Tableau terms and their definitions.

  • Viz/Vizzes/Visualization: These terms mean the same thing as a view, and both refer to the visual representation of your data in a worksheet or dashboard.
  • Workbook: A collection of one or more worksheets and dashboards.
  • Worksheet: A single view of data. Each worksheet can be connected to a single data source.
  • Dashboard: A collection of views shown in a single location where you can compare and monitor a variety of data simultaneously.
  • Report: can mean either a single view or the whole workbook.
  • Dimensions: These are categorical fields (i.e. clinic, provider, date of service) that we want to use to slice and dice our numerical (Measure) data by. Discrete fields create labels in the chart.
  • Measures: These are our metrics, the data we want to analyze. These fields display as aggregates like total income and dollars per visit.
  • Pill: field dragged into the Columns or Rows section of a sheet. Discrete pills are blue and continuous pills are green.
